re-recording history

if you have the time and are not already familiar with the story, do some research on the beach boys' abandoned follow-up to pet sounds. released in 1966, pet sounds is widely considered to be one of the best albums ever recorded. brian wilson began work on smile but never finished it, abandoning the sessions in 1967. what little i've read about the smile sessions over the years has fascinated me. it's captivating stuff, especially when you consider the path brian's life took after the aborted sessions.

brian wilson released SMiLE today. it's a re-recorded version of the album that he began but never finished all those years ago.

you should know that i've never heard the various bootlegs of the smile songs that fanatics have used to piece together their own versions of the album in the absence of an actual release. also, the only beach boys album i actually own is pet sounds (i'm far from an enthusiast). that having been said, this album amazes me. to think that brian had the vision 37 years ago of the album that i'm hearing today is astounding. and his voice sounds great to my ears (having never heard the bootlegs works to my advantage).

catch up on the story and hear this album. it's an extraordinary achievement.
