sleater-kinney: the hot rock
i bought this album at the amherst newbury comics on the day of its release: tuesday, february 23rd, 1999. i guess that means i've found it an enjoyable listen for 7 years, 8 months and 15 days. "get up" will always bring to mind brett and i listening to the cd in the room i shared with nick. he was painting in a sketchpad but kept jumping on and off our couch and spinning in tight little circles as he went. he kept proclaiming "sleater-kinney makes me see apples and asses!" "sleater-kinney makes me see apples and asses!" i saw what he painted and i'll be damned if it didn't look a little bit like apples...and asses.
this past month or so, the hot rock has become one of my all-time favorites. maybe i hadn't been paying enough attention to the words.
whoa - apparently this was my 200th post.

seeing stars
you drunkenly picked at a scab
that was still forming
and now you find yourself here:
sitting awkwardly across a bench;
on what feels too much like display.
just keep staring at the floor.
77...78...79..80...81...
"you look sad. what's wrong?"
"nothing."
a lie.
keep counting.
"just tired?"
"yes."
another lie.
keep counting.
"mmmmm...a mcdonald's milkshake and a cheeseburger."
is this the six hundreds
or seven hundreds now?
"you were much more fun on our last train ride home."
doesn't matter.
just
keep
counting.
